The Potter's Wheel & Beyond: A Workshop with Candice Boese

Explore the Potter’s Wheel and the Art of Jiggering with the Queenston Pottery Team

Join an intimate group of 6 pottery enthusiasts to learn and practice many of the skills and techniques used to make pottery.  In this 3-session introductory workshop, throwing instructor Candice Boese and the Queenston Pottery team guide you through the entire creative process from clay forming through glazing. This workshop emphasizes learning and practicing numerous skills and techniques used to make items sold in our gallery.  Some skills are relatively easy to learn, while others can be significantly more challenging and yet satisfying.

Session 1:  (3 hours) Monday, Sept 15, from 6:30-9:30 pm

  • Throwing on a potter's wheel

  • Jiggering mugs (using a rotating plaster form to assist in precisely forming the clay piece)

Session 2: (3 hours)  Tuesday, Sept 16, from 6:30-9:30 pm

  • Trimming your thrown and jiggered pieces

  • Carving a jiggered piece to create a candle holder

  • Pulling and attaching handles to make a mug

  • Creating a spout to make a small pitcher

Session 3: (3 hours) Monday, Oct 6, from 6:30-9:30 pm

  • The entire glazing process.

  • Your three favorite pieces from sessions 1 & 2 will have been fired to 1000 °C in our bisque kiln and will be ready for you to glaze. You will prep them for glazing, sign and wax the bottoms, dip them into a base glaze, and decorate them with pigments and overglazes using brushwork techniques

The pieces will then be fired to 1330 °C in our next glaze kiln and will be ready for you to collect and enjoy in approximately 8 to 12 weeks.

  • Two kiln firings that will transform your pieces from dry clay into beautiful and durable pottery.  

  • Your own beautiful pottery to bring home after your pieces are fired in our next glaze kiln. (Within approximately 2 months).
