Featuring: Colleen Green

Colleen Green is a self-taught Canadian artist whose vibrant encaustic paintings reflect a deep connection to the natural world and her imaginative landscapes. Born in Maynooth, Ontario, a small village north of Bancroft, Colleen’s creative spirit emerged early. She recalls fond memories of drawing on the walls of her childhood closet—early signs of a lifelong love for art that would continue to evolve over the decades.

Though she has no formal art training, Colleen has always nurtured her artistic instincts. While living in Niagara-on-the-Lake (1978–2000), she took part in weekly life drawing classes at the Niagara Pumphouse. While she humorously admits that life drawing wasn’t her strong suit, it was there she found a sense of community among fellow artists and gained confidence in her evolving practice. During this time, she also formed a lifelong friendship with Queenston Pottery’s own Eva.

Colleen’s primary medium is encaustic painting, an ancient technique that uses a mix of beeswax, damar resin, and pigments (typically oil paints). The wax is melted and applied in layers, allowing her to create richly textured, luminous surfaces. The process is technically demanding, but Colleen embraces its challenges, blending control with spontaneity. During the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, she began experimenting by adding intricate dot patterns over her painted backgrounds, bringing a new layer of energy and movement to her pieces.

Since 2000, Colleen has lived in Prince Edward County, where she continues to create and exhibit her work. She is a regular artist at Arts on Main Gallery in Picton and has been featured in the Art in the County juried show for many years.

Her talent has been recognized with multiple awards:

  • 2023 – The Carson Arthur Award for Approaching Lavender, a serene local landscape that nods to the iconic music of Gordon Lightfoot.

  • 2024 – Best Landscape Award at the Art Gallery of Bancroft for Dreaming of a Summer Sky, praised by jurors for its technical excellence, visual harmony, and the emotional atmosphere it evokes.

“Encaustic is a technically very demanding medium and Ms. Green is to be commended for her meticulous handling of it... The calmness of the scene is given life by the skillful patterning that is incorporated into the sky.” – Art Gallery of Bancroft Jurors

Today, Colleen’s work bridges memory, imagination, and place. Her encaustic paintings are both calming and dynamic, offering viewers a moment of stillness, movement, and beauty all at once.
