Slab to Table: Handcrafted Platters

Create Your Own Serving Platters – Pottery Workshop in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Love pottery and entertaining? In this 3-session hands-on pottery experience, you'll create your own unique serving platters (2)—starting with slabs of clay and ending with two beautiful, functional pieces ready for your table.

During this immersive experience at Queenston Pottery’s working studio in wine country, you will choose from a variety of forms, textures, and tools to shape your design, then finish your platters with your choice of glazes and decorative details. Hands-on and creatively fulfilling, this workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to bring handmade artistry and functional ceramics to their table..

Session 1: (3 hours), September 23, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm

  • Extrude slab

  • Condition slab (compress and flatten surface, flip onto cloth, compress and flatten second side)

  • Cut to shape and add textures

  • Transfer to your choice of plaster forms

  • Shape into/onto plaster forms

  • Leave to harden overnight, becoming “leather hard” so that it can be finished and embellished. 

Session 2: (3 hours), September 24, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm

  • Remove from the plaster form

  • Finish edges and surfaces

  • Sign your pieces (stamped initials or scribed marking)

  • Add embellishments (handles, decorative additions, indentations, and other markings)

  • Leave to fully dry and be fired in the next bisque kiln.

Session 3: (3 hours), October 14, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm

  • Wax bottom

  • Stain indentations (optional)

  • Spray coat base glaze

  • Spray coat accent glaze (optional)

  • Brush work (accents and patterns)

  • Use of a first-class pottery studio, with beautiful gardens and a 47-year history of creating pottery in Niagara-on-the-Lake

  • Expert Instruction from the Queenston Pottery team

  • Two kiln firings that will transform your pieces from dry clay into beautiful and durable pottery.  

  • Your own beautiful platters to bring home, after your pieces are fired in our next glaze kiln. (Within approximately 2 months).

  • Wine, light refreshments, community, connection, and of course, fun!
